i heard the sweetest thing
yesterday, and then it was gone
and i wanted to hear more
like the essay you wrote about grandma
and how strangely she eats her
ice cream. i wish i knew you
everybody speaks so fondly of you
your poem made me want to dance inside my socks
i know so little, about you,
and it makes me sad
if you were here, maybe you could tell daddy
not to be so sad. and i wish the fire
had not swallowed everything left
because all we have is this copy
a copy of a letter, and some pictures
i think i looked at all of them
if not all, then certainly a lot
this christmas was nice. and
not nice like how i remember it was when i was
six or seven, but like talking to an old friend
so familiar
even though everything is so different

i'm happy, i think, complications and all
